PGA Picks: Tour Championship

For the 30 golfers headed to East Lake this weekend, it’s the season finale of the PGA Championship, the Tour Championship.

The event this week is played in Atlanta, Georgia and is an extremely challenging Par 70.  Some of the prior winners here are those that are stellar irons players, like Henrik Stenson, but I think you need to have one of the top 5 FedEx points scorers on your team in this very small field.  If one of the top 5 FedEx point scorers wins this tournament, they win the PGA Championship and the huge prize.

The course is a tricky one where most of the contestants will be finishing over par.  But for fantasy golf purposes, you need guys that can get you birdies somewhere.  With only 30 golfers and sky-high ownership of pretty much everyone, you need to pick guys that can score.

Since it’s such a small field I will be only picking one of each category this time around.

Hot Shot

Dustin Johnson ($11,300 – DraftKings, $11,500 – FanDuel)

I keep picking DJ every week, but what I really love about him this week is that he seems like a contrarian pick against Rose (who is the odds-on favorite to lift the FedEx Cup) that will be low-owned.  I am going to be rostering a highly-motivated, under-owned DJ.

Mid Tier

Tony Finau ($8,600 – DraftKings, $10,300 – FanDuel)

It really would be something if Finau’s first-ever big-time PGA tournament win would come here – which, if it happens, would have Finau lifting the trophy, since he is indeed one of the Top 5 that could win the trophy with a win.  Even if he “only” makes a run and comes close, though, Finau is such a consistent scorer overall that he’s hard to fade.  (And I won’t be.)

Low Tier

Kyle Stanley ($6,100 – DraftKings, $7,600 – FanDuel)

You’ll need a salary saver, and Stanley is my go-to guy for that, especially at this price.  He’s a constant threat for scoring, is very good with his wedges, and is certainly a threat to be in the T15 with more than an average number of birdies.  If he does that, he will be on the winning lineup.
