PGA Picks: BMW Championship

For the second straight week, Bryson DeChambeau won a huge event to put him in the mix for the FedEx Playoffs.  The next stop on the road to the FedEx Cup is Pennsylvania, where the BMW PGA Championship, a no-cut event featuring 69 of the top golfers in the world, is set to be contested.

The event this week is played in Newtown Square, PA at Aromink Golf Course, a Par 70 course that features a ton of bunkers and, as at all of these big events, will require a full toolbox to compete.  If there’s any aspect I will be weighing more than just the straight Shots Gained: Approach and pure ball striking it’s sand saves and iron play.  I think an elite irons guy has a better shot of doing well here than others.

Remember most of all that this is a no-cut event, which changes the DFG math a little.  You need scorers; pars won’t do.

Hot Shots

Dustin Johnson ($11,600 – DraftKings, $12,400 – FanDuel)

With DeChambeau’s win this week, DJ falls to No. 2 on the FedEx Points list behind Bryson.  Could you see a dominating DJ performance this week to make a run at reclaiming first place? I can.

Tony Finau ($9,500 – DraftKings, $10,800 – FanDuel)

Finau is a DFG darling, but more so this week in a no-cut event where you’re going to need a birdie-maker to do well.  He’ll be chalk, but he’s good chalk.

Mid Tier

Webb Simpson ($8,100 – DraftKings, $10,700 – FanDuel)

Before the pricing came out this week I took one look at Aromink and thought “Webb Simpson” right away.  This SG:Approach heavy course is perfect for his game.

Paul Casey ($8,000 – DraftKings, $10,300 – FanDuel)

Casey last week finished at T21, which was enough to get him as one of captain Thomas Bjørn’s picks for the Ryder Cup team.  What I’m waiting for is for him to look like a guy who can dominate in the Ryder cup.  A win here would do that.  Can he this week? If he gets a boost from being selected, I could see it.

Low Tier

Ian Poulter ($7,100 – DraftKings, $8,600 – FanDuel)

You have to forget his missed cut this week and consider that Poulter has a boost from making the Ryder Cup team and a need to get points to climb in the FedEx point standings.  I think people will sleep on him due to recency bias.  In a no-cut event, he’s a smart play because you want to be on board when he figures it out.

Brice Garnett ($6,300 – DraftKings, $7,200 – FanDuel)

Garnett has been playing his way into these later rounds with some incredible scores.  Why get off now? His birdie rate is better that a load of golfers above 7k and his price allows you to do a DJ/Brice stack and plenty of leftover salary.
