Marked Matchups (Play these guys!)
Adam Thielen, Minnesota Vikings
Thielen has developed into an absolute star over the past couple of seasons with the Vikings, and he should get a dream matchup this week against the New York Football Jets who are rolling out Perry Nickerson at nickel corner. While Nickerson has wheels, having run a 4.32-40, he simply has not shown the ability to cover anyone, giving up close to 2.5 yards per route in coverage as well as close to 0.50 fantasy points. Thielen should be able to rack up consistent chunk yardage in this matchup
Albert Wilson, Miami Dolphins
When Detroit drafted Teez Tabor out of Florida, I had some doubts, in particular, the most important asset for a corner – his long speed. He lacked a ton of it, so he will be in tough this week against the Dolphins’ Albert Wilson, who has had a very very nice year. While Tabor has struggled (71% catch rate while in coverage, 2 yards per route in coverage), Wilson has excelled (2.79 yards per route run, 0.65 fantasy points per route). This is shaping up to be a huge day with home run potential for Wilson.
Pierre Garcon, San Francisco 49ers
The Los Angeles Rams have an exceptional defence, led by All-Pros in all facets of the game. However, Troy Hill is one of those potential chinks in the Rams armour as a slot and replacement boundary cornerback for Aqib Talib. While Garcon is an ever-reliable PPR receiver who won’t wow you, but will generate solid yardage and reception totals, Troy Hill has been a total sieve to fantasy points, giving up a whopping 0.67 fantasy per route in coverage and 3.6 yards per route. Couple this with a 77% catch rate while in coverage, and I expect Garcon to have a double-digit reception day with 100 yards.
Sneaky Matchup of the Week
Keke Coutee, Houston Texans
With All-Pros Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye likely to follow DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller around, expect Keke Coutee to have himself a nice day in the slot against Jags nickel corner, Tyler Patmon. While Patmon hasn’t been terrible like the previous corners mentioned in this article, he has been mediocre at best, giving up 0.43 fantasy points per route in coverage (among the 15 highest in the league) as well as a 68% catch rate. With the red matchup and the lack of name value, expect Coutee to be very low-owned for a guy who could have a potentially great game (He put up 24.7 DKP against the Colts and is just 4.3k)
Fool’s Gold Matchup of the Week
Robert Woods, Los Angeles Rams
While the Rams have a great matchup this Sunday against the 49ers, Robert Woods will likely draw the tougher of assignments from the 49ers’ Richard Sherman. The former Seahawk great has been exceptional with the niners, as he is almost never thrown at, and has given up a league-low 0.31 yards per route in coverage and 0.06 fantasy points per route while in coverage. Both those numbers are less than half of that of Patrick Peterson’s. While Woods appears to be in a great spot, I’m leaning towards Kupp and Cooks for this matchup.
