Welcome to the Sunday Draftkings preview. We are back after missing yesterday due to a power outage at my house that lasted more than 24 hours. We have a 5 game New Year’s Eve slate that for cash looks rather chalky. Let’s get started!
NATHAN MACKINNON Colorado Avalanche $7200
The Islanders suck at keeping the puck out of their net and Mackinnon has been putting the puck in the net for the Avs at a great pace. He has more than a point a game this season and is 9th in the NHL in scoring.
EVGENI MALKIN Pittsburgh Penguins $7100
You guys know how I like to use second line players on the road. Malkin is likely the best second line player in the NHL and the Penguins get the Red Wings tonight. Other reasons I like Malkin over Crosby tonight are Malkin gets more shots on goal than Crosby does give him a better floor. When you are paying $7100 a few shots on goal won’t make you happy but if he adds in an assist it shouldn’t kill your lineup.
NICK SCHMALTZ Chicago Blackhawks $4200
Schmaltz gets to move up the Blackhawks lineup tonight with the injury to Anisimov. He took full advantage of his opportunity on Friday playing with Kane as he had 3 assists. He will also be on the Blackhawks first power play unit tonight adding to his value. At his price, he is almost a must-start given is play in the Blackhawks lineup.
LEON DRAISAITL Edmonton Oilers $5300
Draisaitl’s price on Draftkings has dropped from $6100 10 games ago to $5300 today. Over that span, he has 12 points and has averaged 4.2 DK points. This makes no sense to me. He has points in 6 straight games and 8 in his last 10 games.
PHIL KESSEL Pittsburgh Penguins $7100
Kessel leads the Penguins in points and he is 6th in the league in shots. If you are going to only take one Penguins player tonight Kessel is the guy from the Penguins you want in your lineup tonight.
MIKKO RANTANEN Colorado Avalanche $5200
Rantanen has at least a point in 8 straight games for the Avs and he should make it 9 tonight against the Islanders. He is a little bit of a value at $5200 giving you a little salary relief.
GABRIEL LANDESKOG Colorado Avalanche $6100
Sticking with the theme of the Islanders are bad at keeping the puck out or their net. Landeskog completes the Avalanche first line stack. I like Rantanen better than Landeskog for cash Landeskog is still a great option tonight at home against the Islanders.
DEVIN SHORE Dallas Stars $3600
Shore is getting the garden seat for the Stars tonight, playing on a line with Seguin and Benn. His price is low allowing us to fit in some of the higher priced players that we want in our lineups. He isn’t a lock to get any points tonight but playing on a line with Benn and Seguin gives him a great opportunity to score tonight.
JUJHAR KHAIRA Edmonton Oilers $3500
Playing with Draisatl has benefits and Khaira was been benefiting. He has scored in 2 of his last 3 games and looks to keep that going tonight.
OLLI MAATTA Pittsburgh Penguins $4200
With Chris Letang out for the Penguins, Maatta will be getting the first team power play unit opportunities for the Pens. Detroit’s penalty killing has been below average lately. The Penguins have all of the weapons needed to have a great power play and have the 3rd best power play unit so far this season and we should see them score on the power play at least once tonight giving Maatta an opportunity for a good night.
BRENT BURNS San Jose Sharks $7200
Burns might be the most reliable fantasy player again at the moment. His price is up there but it isn’t impossible to fit him into our lineups. If he stays hot it won’t be long before he is $8000 so let’s stay on the Burns wave while it is still affordable.
ERIK JOHNSON Colorado Avalanche $5200
Johnson is another player that is getting an opportunity to play on a first power play unit due to injury. He is more expensive but he comes with a higher floor given how many blocks and shots on goal he gets a game.
Keep in mind that this article is written before all starting goalies are announced. Please keep an eye out to make sure that your goalie is going to start.
CAM TALBOT Edmonton Oilers $7400
The Jets are missing a number of their best players and the Oilers have been surging of late. The game is in Edmonton and I think the Oilers need to win the game a lot more than the Jets do.
MATT MURRAY Pittsburgh Penguins $8400
Although the Pens are on the road, they are in Detroit. Detroit has only won 7 of their 19 home games. Murray and the Penguins should be a safe bet for a win and Murry could be in line for a shutout tonight.
