CFL Week One Preview

CFL 2018 week 1

Welcome to another CFL season and to my CFL DFS advice article.  I am going to change up the format this season. I am going to go through plays by position instead of going game by game.  For those of you that read last season, I would really like your feedback on the new format.

QB:

There is lots of value on this week one slate.  I am going to keep it really simple at QB this week and stick with the top guys and seek out value elsewhere.

1. MIKE REILLY Edmonton Eskimos $11,000

Mike  Reilly is my number one QB this week and I expect him to be my top ranked QB many times this season.  Reilly gets a matchup on the road in Winnipeg. Reilly is the most expensive QB by a lot this week and good reason.  The Bombers are going to be without their starting QB for the first 4-6 weeks of the season and I expect the Bombers to struggle on offense giving Reilly extra opportunities to score points.  Reilly also runs the Esks short yardage offense and lead QBs with 6 rushing touchdowns in 2017.

BO LEVI MITCHELL Calgary Stampeders $9,800

The Stamps are not the far and away favorite to win the west this season as they have lost players on both sides of the ball but they are at home this week against an eastern opponent.  The Tiger-Cats finished the season strong last year after a coaching change but they are going to be in tough against the Stamps offense this week on the road. The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the TiCats next week either as they travel to Edmonton to play the Esks.

FADE

JONATHON JENNINGS BC Lions $9,500

I expect Jennings to be a popular choice this week as it appears that he has the best matchup this week against Montreal.  I will not be using him in my lineups this week. Jennings had a rough second reason for the Lions last year and I am going to take a wait and see approach with him this year.

RB:

1. JAMES WILDER JR Toronto Blue Argonauts $7,500

The three-headed monster of last year’s Agro backfield appears to be gone and Wilder is the primary back for the Argos to start the season.  Look for him to be effective running the ball and catching the ball out of the backfield for the Argos. For the Argos to have success this week they are going to look for Wilder to do both on Friday.

2. JEREMIAH JOHNSON BC Lions $6,600

Keep an how the Lions look when they put out their depth chart Friday.  If Brandon Rutley is not on the depth chart then I really like Jeremiah Johnson against Montreal this week.  The Lions are going to struggle to throw the ball against the Als and will need to rely on their running game to move the ball and to keep their defense off the field.  Look for Johnson to have a big game.

3. C.J. GABLE Edmonton Eskimos $7,300

After Gable got to Edmonton he exploded behind the huge Eskimos offensive line.  Gable was used by the Eskimos as a pass catcher and a runner. Look for him to get a few ppr points this week against the Bombers.  The Bombers should be good against the run this season as they added Adam Bighill to their defense.

4.TERRY WILLIAMS Calgary Stampeders $6100

Terry Williams broke Stamps as the starting running back.  He is the 9th highest priced RB on this slate and is the starting running back for the favorite team in the game with the highest projected point total.

5. MERCER TIMMIS Hamilton Tiger-Cats $3500

It looks like Timmis is going to get the start this week for the Tiger-Cats with Alex Green out with a hand injury.  At $3500 he is a great value play.

Fade

ANDREW HARRIS Winnipeg Blue Bombers $7700

Andrew Harris is the best and most dynamic running back in the CFL.  Why am I fading him? He is going to be highly owned this week. The Bombers are going to expect him to do a lot and I expect that the Eskimos know that too  Also I think the Bombers are going to struggle to move the ball and get first downs limiting the Bombers snaps on offense.

WR:

1. ERIC ROGERS Calgary Stampeders $5,500

Eric Rogers returns to CFL after 3 seasons in the NFL.  While we don’t know for sure if Rogers is going to return to his 1400 yard receiving form. At $5,500 he is a must play.

2.BRANDON BANKS Hamilton Tiger-Cats $8700

The second half of the 2017 season saw a huge change to how the Tiger-Cats use Brandon Banks.  He went from being used almost exclusively as a kick returner to a receiver. That change made him one of the best plays in fantasy.  I expect that he will have a huge night against the Stamps. We don’t have the depth charts yet but I have a feeling he is going to have a plus matchup.

3.DEREL WALKER Edmonton Eskimos $9200

Derel Walker returned to the CFL and the Eskimos last season and picked up where he left off before heading south.  The Eskimos are without Bowman and Zylstra from last season making him the clear primary target for the Eskimos to start the season.

4.D’HAQUILLE WILLIAMS Edmonton Eskimos $7400

Duke Williams impressed last season in a limited role for the Eskimos but as stated earlier the Eskimos have lost some of their receiver depth and Williams will be playing in the slot on Thursday night making him a great option this week.

5.EMMANUEL ARCENEAUX BC Lions $8200

Arceneaux looked to be Jennings favorite receiver in the Lions last preseason game of the season.  Given the way he runs after he makes catches and is a threat to score twice in every game he plays in I like Arceneaux a lot this week.

Defense:

BC LIONS $4800

The Lions added at defensive line this offseason and I think they will have an easier time putting pressure on the QB.  They are going up against the offense that should finish the season as worst the offense of the season the Lions are going to be a popular choice at defense this week.

SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS $4400

I kind of like the Riders defense this week.  They are at home and the Argos offense isn’t as deep as it was last year.  At least that is how it appears to me. The Riders have an underrated secondary and should be able to keep the score low.

That’s everything for week one.  Good luck everyone and we will talk with you before week two.
